Acupressure, an aid to the commencement of natural labour

Acupressure works through the stimulation of precise points along energy pathways or channels.

It is traditional Chinese medicine and can be uncomfortable although not generally painful. No needles are used, just firm pressure applied to significant points.

There are 4 main acupressure points that can be used to help in the commencement of labour. They should never be used at any other time in pregnancy as they can induce prematurely. Our experience suggests that acupressure does encourage and stimulate your body, but if it is not ready to labour then the treatment encourages the ripening of the cervix. This will aid the process if a medical induction of labour is still necessary.

Acupressure generally encourages the body to release prostaglandin. Prostaglandins are the hormones that stimulate labour. Acupressure can prepare the cervix for labour, thinning and effacing it. If the cervix is already thin then acupressure will assist in stimulating labour.

This will only be performed once you at or beyond your due date.

We may also offer to perform a membrane ‘stretch and sweep’ if you are past your due date and there are no contra-indications.

Naturally this will only be with your consent and prior to this procedure, a check of your baby’s well-being will be carried out as well as a detailed discussion regarding your own health and that of your pregnancy. If there are any reasons for concern no further treatment will take place and you may be referred to your main care provider for assessment.
